Over A Century of Legacy: Five Generations Strong at Bitter Neumann

- About Bitter Neumann
Bitter Neumann has been a proud family-owned business for 103 years. Looking back on over a century of serving our community, we can’t help but reflect on the legacy of five generations of family ownership that have shaped who we are today. What began in 1922 with a single vision from Alfred Bitter Sr. has grown into a trusted,community-rooted business that spans generations.
From One Vision to a Family Tradition
When Alfred Sr. founded Bitter Neumann, he likely couldn’t have imagined just how far his dream would go. But with time, his passion for serving the community became a family mission. In 1960, his sons, Harold and Alfred “Butch” Jr., officially joined him as partners. Their dedication helped Bitter Neumann expand to a larger building, further strengthening its presence and commitment to customers.
By 1990, the torch was passed again, this time to Harold’s daughter Janet and her husband Ed Radue, who had been part of the business since 1968. Together, they continued the tradition of service and innovation while instilling a sense of pride and purpose in the next generation.
The Next Generation Steps In
As Ed and Janet nurtured the business, they also encouraged their children to follow their passions. While Lisa, their second oldest, found her calling as a dedicated Christian day-school teacher, Tim, Dan, and Amy began working alongside their parents from a young age — learning the ropes, stacking shelves, and discovering what it means to run a family-owned business from the ground up.
In 2007, a pivotal moment arrived: ownership was officially passed to Tim and Dan, with Amy continuing her vital role in operations. That day, filled with pride, unity, and hope for the future, marked the beginning of the fourth generation of family leadership at Bitter Neumann. Dan and Tim opened a second store in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 2012 to serve another great community along the Lakeshore.
A Business Grows — and Evolves
After 13 years of co-ownership, the family made the thoughtful decision to streamline leadership. In June 2020, Dan became the sole owner of Bitter Neumann, and the following year, he expanded the family’s business footprint yet again by acquiring Hansen Furniture in Waupaca, Wisconsin. In 2025, Hansen adopted the Bitter Neumann name, and Bitter Neumann has three convenient locations serving eastern
and east central Wisconsin. With each change since 1922, one thing remains constant: the spirit of family and the commitment to quality service that Alfred Sr. championed all those years ago.
A Bright Future with the Fifth Generation
Today, the fifth generation of the Bitter Neumann family is stepping up. Justin, Tim’s son, leads the charge of the delivery and installation team. Ashley, Dan’s daughter, contributes across service, sales, merchandising, and marketing. Austin, Dan’s son, is a valued part of the delivery and installation team. And Logan, Amy’s son, is learning the ropes in the warehouse and the Appliance Service Department.
Each of them represents a new chapter — young energy guided by the wisdom of a century-long legacy. Their interest and involvement signal a bright future for the business and the continuation of a proud family tradition.
